When Jesus Appears To Be Sleeping

Have you ever felt like Jesus was sleeping on the clock?

When your prayers go unanswered.

When His presence is so near, yet, He seems so far away.

When you know He ordered your steps to pursue a tough friendship, begin a new ministry, adopt that child, or quit your job.

Yet, when you do, in-fact, step out and obey— midway through your obedience you start to lose all confidence. You begin to question if you really heard from God, or if you made a decision out of emotion. Let me just tell you dear friend, He is NOT asleep!!

I better just say it louder for the people in the back

He’s very much alive and awake!!

I am reminded of how much I love the story of Jesus telling His disciples to get in the boat and follow Him. His disciples of course jump in the boat with Him, and I believe, they initially had much confidence and courage. But friend, the Bible tells us that SUDDENLY a violent storm arose and the waves of the sea began to cover the boat. (Matthew 8:24)

Could you imagine the fear that probably began to grip their hearts? The second thoughts of, “should we have listened to this man?”, or maybe, “let’s stop what we are doing and reconsider this whole thing?”.

Can you relate? Have you ever had a “suddenly” that caught you off guard right in the middle of your obedience to God. Maybe it was a financial set back, maybe it was a medical diagnosis, or maybe if was just the thoughts of the enemy playing tricks on your mind to stop what God was trying to do.

Let me just throw in a spoiler alert here....

God is faithful to finish what He began! He told the disciples to get in the boat. Do you really think He didn’t know there was a storm coming? Of course He did! As the storm continued to rage all around the boat, the disciples went to Jesus and said, “Lord save us, we are going to die.” And Jesus responded, “why are you fearful, O you of little faith.” He then arose and rebuked the winds and waves and they obeyed Him. The disciples were astonished, saying, “who can this be that even the winds and waves obey Him?”

Friend, that’s the God we serve!!! All knowing and all powerful!!

Let me encourage you today, Jesus might have been “asleep” on that boat, but He is not asleep in your life, nor is He surprised by the wind and waves that come to set you back. He actually tells us, do not fear, instead have faith.

Friend, trust me, I know it’s hard! When the waves are knocking you every which direction and the winds have all but blown you down, you must stand on the truth of God’s word. Follow His leading down the path that He has chosen for you no matter what circumstances and detours come your way. And, above all else, fear not, for He is with you!

In His Grip,
